“Therapists, and medical doctors! please be cautious when using the Diagnostic Satistical Manual (DSM)!! Yes, a diagnosis can be helpful when thinking about a patient’s symptomology and treatment, BUT it is also stigmatizing and fails to take into account each patient’s unique subjectivity. No two patients will EVER look the same, even if they are both presenting with borderline personality disorder. Respect your patient’s uniqueness, and respect the impact of a diagnosis.
And lastly, to individuals struggling with a mental health disorder, understand that a diagnosis simply provides mental health professionals with a language to discuss how to best treat your needs.
A diagnosis does NOT define who you are. You are human.”
