Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is one of the most poorly understood and stigmatised mental health conditions. Individuals diagnosed with BPD often report experiences of being mistreated and traumatised by negative experiences within public mental health and hospital settings. Negative stereotypes held by both professionals and community can lead to individuals receiving improper or insufficient care and being poorly treated. Individuals diagnosed with BPD are often people who are highly sensitive, have an exceptional capacity for deep attachment, and whom have not had their early needs for stability, security, nurturance, attunement, validation, and unconditional love met. Individuals diagnosed with BPD need love, understanding, nurturance, and highly sensitive, specialised care. When we know or work with someone with BPD, it is important that we consider the unmet needs and emotional experience underlying that individual’s external presentation or behaviour. Nobody is a diagnosis and a diagnosis should never limit the care someone receives. BPD is a treatable condition and it’s possible for individuals to recover with proper care.
