“Explaining yourself when you’re mentally ill, is challenging. Particularly as a mother I find explaining my PTSD and the way it manifests (as anxiety and depression) extremely difficult to my children, and their father.
Every time I feel myself lulling into a low spot, I remember how important it is to openly show and speak to myself with compassion; so that if my children ever find themselves in a similar spot, they know the answer is self love – and not self loathing or punishment.
We wouldn’t berate someone with a broken leg, for not joining us on a brisk, 10k walk – yet we are all too ready to send mentally impaired, often traumatised people back into work environments, into education, into life.
Give someone a phone call or text today, no pressure, just as an ear, we all need it somedays.
S xo”
