One of the techniques used in the stabilization phase of trauma therapy is the practice of containment.
When you are feeling emotionally dysregulated or really charged up and you need to regulate yourself, then try this.
Imagine a container that is strong and secure enough to hold your emotions.
Next, tell your emotional self, “I hear you, I acknowledge you and I validate you. But at this moment I need to contain these challenging emotions. I am not discarding or disowning you. I will come back for you, when I can.”
Next imagine the different emotions as objects. In this drawing for example, fear is in the form of a knife, shame is a dark blob, anxiety is a red ball and rage is a ball of fire.
Slowly put these objects into the container. Close the lid and lock it up. Store the container in a safe space, away from you. Then take some long, slow deep breaths. Rinse and repeat if necessary, until you feel calmer.“
