Repost 📷 @lovelifeandtherapy – We can often feel inappropriate guilt or shame about things we did or did not do, especially following a trauma. Before you blame yourself for what happened check in with these common thinking errors.
Are you falsely telling yourself you knew it was going to happen and there falsely concluding that you caused the event?
Are you exaggerating your role? Who else was involved?
Are you telling yourself that just because you could have prevented it, you caused it? Don’t assume you have all the responsibility!
Are you assuming that you had the power to alter something that wasn’t foreseeable?
Are you failing to see that we are hard wired to make decisions differently when we are under pressure or in an emergency, and therefore you may have reacted differently to what you expected?
Are you assuming you knew information that you should have acted upon back then that you didn’t?
Are you unfairly comparing yourself to an ideal standard?
Are you only focusing on the good things that could have happened if you had chosen a different option?
Are you ignoring the benefits of the option you did choose?
Are you blaming yourself for the outcome, even though the outcome wasn’t your intention?
Are you blaming yourself for having a normal human reaction?
Are you ignoring the fact that when all choices are bad, choosing the ‘least bad’ option is a moral choice?
Are you confusing a feeling with evidence?- just because you feel guilty it does not make is so!!
