Do you feel like you have to be extra productive to feel worthy? Do you have issues with just sitting around and doing nothing? Sometimes you’re just too depressed to do stuff but the fact that you’re not doing something worthy makes you feel even more depressed? Yep, we’ve all been there. As a high functioning borderline, I tend to want to achieve a lot of stuff and push myself as hard as possible. It sounds like a good quality – it sure is good news for the corporate world where this sort of overachieving is highly appreciated – but it often leaves me stressed and unable to relax. Only a few years ago I realised that high achieving traits often stem from low self esteem. You’re low so you want to get higher, makes sense. You don’t feel worthy so you work harder. You beat yourself when you try to relax as you feel you should be doing something productive instead. It doesn’t help that our closest people – friends and family – often tell us to pull it together and just do something. Well, without getting proper help it’s really hard, ok? So screw this. We don’t need to feel ashamed for not being productive. It’s ok to get along, work on our recovery, look after ourselves. We’re ok. We’re worthy.
