“How do I trust myself again?”

“So many of my clients, especially in addiction recovery, ask this.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Building trust in yourself is a process. If you find that you resort to sex, food, alcohol, or any other form of numbing when feelings get overwhelming…it can be particularly hard to trust yourself to pick the right coping skill.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You may reach for what feels “good” now and not later. This is a habit you’ve solidified over time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This list of questions can help guide you. It’s important to use them after you’ve regulated your nervous system and brought yourself back into the present.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you don’t feel grounded in your present or your body is in overdrive (heart racing, hard to think clearly, etc.) spend a lot more time in that kindness and breathing stage. Your body is trying to convince you it knows best. You have the power here, don’t forget that.

Once you are grounded and calm, move to the questions.

Honestly I use this all the time now. It starts to become quicker and less robotic over time.
